Lindenhurst Named Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation

March 21, 2025 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

Mayor Michael Lavorata has announced that the Arbor Day Foundation has again named the Village of Lindenhurst, NY, a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. “We are pleased and honored to be given this designation from the Arbor Day Foundation for the 36th year”, stated Mayor Lavorata. The Arbor Day Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

“We all benefit when communities like Lindenhurst place a high priority on planting and caring for trees, one of our nation’s most beautiful resources,” added Trustee Doug Madlon. “Trees shade our homes and add beauty to our neighborhoods, and they also provide many environmental, economic and social benefits.”

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Lindenhurst has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Communities that earn Tree City USA recognition not only have taken the time to meet the four standards, they know that trees:

  • Promote healthier communities by filtering the air we breathe by removing dust and other particles.
  • Moderate climate, conserve water and provide vital habitat for wildlife.
  • Reduce the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings.
  • Reduce energy use and increase property values.

About the Arbor Day Foundation

The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental and education organization of more than 1 million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information on the Foundation and its programs can be found at www.arborday.org

SNOW SEASON RESIDENT REMINDERS

December 26, 2024 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

As we enter this Winter Season, the Village of Lindenhurst would like to remind our residents of some of the ways they can help to keep our Village safe during the cold & snow.

· Now that temperatures are dropping, if you have lawn sprinklers that spray or drain onto sidewalks and roadways, please make the necessary adjustments to avoid the creation of dangerous, icy conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

· Be alert to weather advisories. To receive alerts directly to your phone or email, please sign up for our emergency alerts system:

· As soon as you are aware that bad weather is on the way:

o Make every effort to keep your car off the street. This protects your car from being plowed in, or being hit by passing vehicles, and the snowplow has space to safely plow the snow.

o If you have an outdoor portable basketball hoop, as per Village Code, it must be removed from the Village roadway. This is especially important to keep the roadway clear for the safe and efficient removal of snow by our Village plows.

· When shoveling snow out of the mouth of your driveway, please throw the snow to the right of your driveway (the direction to your right when you are looking at the street from your property). Throwing or plowing snow into the road can create a patch of snow and ice and cause a hazardous condition. Please note, it is unlawful to shovel or dump snow into spaces reserved for handicap parking.

· Please note the following important emergency numbers:

Fire/Rescue — (631) 226-1212

Police Emergency — 911

Department of Public Works — (631) 957-7520

Code Enforcement – (631) 957-7519

Public Safety – (631) 793-5366

PSEG – 1-800-490-0075 to report downed wires and hazardous conditions

If there is an emergency, please call 911.
