“No parent should hear the words ‘your child has cancer and there is nothing we can do’,” recounted Mayor Lavorata from the foundation’s website, “The Christina Renna Foundation is doing important work to get to a place where those words do not need to be spoken.”

The Lindenhurst Historical Society will host a Sunday Morning Pancake Breakfast October 13, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:0 a.m.

Join the Lindenhurst Historical Society at Applebee’s Lindenhurst as the community continues to celebrate the 1901 Restored LIRR Depot & Freight House Museum’s 50th Anniversary.

Lindenhurst, NY – The Lindenhurst Historical Society continues its celebration of the 1901 Restored LIRR Depot & Freight House Museum’s 50th Anniversary with a Sunday Morning Pancake Breakfast, October 13, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Lindenhurst Applebee’s Restaurant, 600 North Wellwood Avenue.

The 1901 Restored LIRR Depot & Freight House Museum located at Irmisch Park (South Broadway and South Third Street) has been integral to the Village of Lindenhurst and the Historical Society’s mission to preserve and celebrate the Village’s history.  In 1967, when it was learned that the Depot and Freight House stood in the way of the LIRR’s plans to eliminate grade crossings by elevating the Babylon line, the Lindenhurst Historical Society interceded.   Rather than demolishing the historic structure, the LIRR agreed to donate the structure to the Historical Society.  In  a joint effort with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst, the building was moved to Irmisch Park where work ensued to separate the buildings and develop both as a museum complex dedicated to the premise that the railroad was a catalyst to the founding of our community in 1870, when the City of Breslau was established.  Museum renovations were completed in 1974 and the museum’s dedication and grand opening took place May 18, 1975.

The 50th Anniversary celebration kicked off earlier this year with the unveiling of a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker which bears an inscription indicating the historic significance of the 1901 Restored LIRR Depot and Freight House.   The celebration will continue into next spring when a Family Fun Day is being planned to commemorate the May 18, 1975 opening of the Depot and Freight House as a museum.

Tickets for the Sunday Morning Pancake Breakfast are $12/person and $10/child (10 and under)  and can be purchased at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Senior Center, 293 Buffalo Avenue, Lindenhurst or at Aboff’s Paints, 191 North Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst or by emailing the Society at Lindenhursthistoricalsociety@gmail.com. Breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and juice or coffee. Gift baskets and a 50/50 will be raffled.  Additional information is available on Facebook at Breslau Lindy or by calling(631) 226-0209.

LINDENHURST VFW POST 7279 CELEBRATES RE-OPENING

September 16, 2024 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

The Lindenhurst Veterans of Foreign War Post 7279 recently celebrated their re-opening with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony organized by the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber, along with several State, County, Town and Village officials, joined Post Commander Tom Kelly and other VFW Officers to officially commemorate their re-opening (pictured here).

The Wade-Burns Post Hall, located at 560 North Delaware Avenue, had a devastating fire in September 2019, and was forced to close its doors. Through the generosity, and hard work, of local officials, craftsmen, laborers, VFW members, and the community, the hall was rebuilt, and is now open for use by the VFW membership, Scout troops, community groups, and private rentals.

LINDENHURST JUNIOR MAYOR CREATES PROJECT TO HELP SPREAD KINDNESS

August 21, 2024 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

Lindenhurst Junior Mayor Kennedy Pugh (pictured here) came to the Village Board with a proposal to help get her community to spread more kindness. Her idea was to create a “Kindness Wheel” – people could spin a color wheel and receive a color-coded “random act of kindness” task to perform. The Village Board thought this was a fantastic idea, and in cooperation and coordination with the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, Kennedy set up her Kindness Wheel at the August “Wednesdays on Wellwood” street fair. At the event, over 300 people spun her Kindness Wheel, creating a positive effect in the Lindenhurst community and beyond.

Deputy Mayor RJ Renna said, “I spun the Kindness Wheel and had to say hello to a stranger. It was a lot of fun to do, and I hope everyone else enjoyed spreading their kindness as well. I was so impressed by Kennedy’s creativity and drive in coming up with this idea and seeing it through to fruition. Small actions can create a large impact.”

The Village created the Junior Mayors program in 2023, in partnership with the Lindenhurst School District, as part of its Centennial celebration. It was such a great success, the Village decided to continue the program, to annually recognize and nurture our young leaders of tomorrow!
