Holiday Food Drive 11/27 – 12/22

Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta along with Village of Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata and Deputy Mayor/ Trustee Maryann Weckerle are hosting a food drive to support local Village of Lindenhurst Food Pantries.

Donations will be collected at the following locations:

Lindenhurst Village Hall – Main Lobby – 430 S. Wellwood Ave – Mon. – Fri. 9am to 2pm.

Lindenhurst Memorial Library – 1 Lee Avenue, Mon.- Thurs. 9am to 7pm, Fri, 9am to 6pm. & Sat. 9am to 5pm.

Mayor’s Message – December 1, 2020

In recent news, we have been hearing the wonderful reports about effective COVID vaccines that have been developed, tested, and will soon be administered in phases to the public.  This news is like a beautiful sunrise, coming up after a long, dark night.  With COVID case numbers currently high (Newsday reported on 12/1 that Lindenhurst Village has 850 cumulative cases; a 6.14% increase) and hospitals full, we are not out of the darkness yet, but we are seeing the first rays of sunlight.

As has been the case with most holidays this year, Christmas will look different in 2020.  Many activities in December have already been cancelled, and with hospitals and healthcare workers stretched thin, more restrictions are on the horizon.  However, we know that they are temporary.  We are still walking through the dark tunnel and must be careful, but we can see the light at the end of it.

I understand how trying – mentally, emotionally, and physically – this effort is for us all.  Our Lindenhurst Community has already come so far in rising to the challenges of this pandemic.  At the same time, I urge you not to let your guard down.  We must all recommit to taking care of ourselves, and each other, and remain vigilant as ever about wearing a mask, physical distancing, hand washing, and all public health measures.  These measures are critical elements to our success as the Lindenhurst Community, and as your Mayor, I am grateful for all you have done thus far.

Renovations at the Rainbow Room

In the Village’s on-going effort to improve and upgrade the Lindenhurst Rainbow Senior Citizen Center, major renovations are happening to the newly designated Senior Rainbow Room.  Utilizing Federal Community Development Block Grant funds, in conjunction with the Town of Babylon, the Village is reconstructing an old, dilapidated, neglected area of the Center for improved safety, comfort, handicap accessibility, and service to our Senior residents.

This project is a marvelous example of the Village & Town working together for the people of Lindenhurst.  We extend our thanks to Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer for his ongoing support.

Dear Village Residents,

The Pandemic is becoming more critical all across the United States; new records are being set daily.  According to Newsday, as of November 18th, there has been a 5.29 daily increase in Corona Virus cases within the Village of Lindenhurst.

With the Thanksgiving Holiday and extended time off from work this week, everyone should re-think how they will be seeing their families, extended families, and friends.  Consider smaller groups and, if possible, separate tables.  Maybe invite family and friends over to celebrate Thanksgiving on different days so that you maintain a smaller group.  Another suggestion is to use technology to celebrate the holiday with friends and loved ones.

A vaccine is very close for distribution, so I am hopeful the Pandemic of 2020 might be over soon.  However, in the meantime, it is going to be different during our Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  Kicking the Holiday Season off with a family “super-spreader” get together would be heart breaking.

Again, I urge everyone to use an abundance of caution to provide your family and friends the safety, security, and peace of mind so that everyone can focus on family, friends, and festive holiday fun. May God bless all of you, and I am proud to serve Lindenhurst as your Mayor.

Free Masks Available for Lindenhurst Village Businesses

The Village of Lindenhurst received a generous donation of PPE from Village Resident Franklin Cruz. The Village would like to distribute these masks to businesses located in the Village of Lindenhurst. If your business would like to receive a box of 50 masks, please fill out the below form and submit via email to info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov.

Downtown Project Announced

The Village of Lindenhurst held a press conference to announce the start of several projects in the downtown. One of those projects being the construction of bulb-outs on South Wellwood Avenue. The Village will be working with Greenman-Pedersen Inc. and using Suffolk County Jumpstart Grant funds to construct several bulb-outs along South Wellwood Avenue. The bulb-outs will improve pedestrian safety and create a more walkable downtown.

It was also announced that 30,000 were donated to the downtown businesses by Village resident and businessman, Franklin Cruz. These masks will be distributed for use by employees and customers.

Trustee RJ Renna stated, “The funding from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will greatly assist with ongoing improvements to our downtown.” Mayor Lavorata noted that, “This is one more step forward in the revitalization of the Village’s downtown. We look forward to putting these improvements in place with the funds from the Jumpstart grant.”

Mayor’s Message – September 2020

Dear Village Residents:

With all the news of the Coronavirus crisis, it would be easy to forget that experts are calling for an active tropical storm and hurricane season.  Tropical Storm/Hurricane Season began June 1st and will last until November 30th, but the peak of the season will be in our area throughout September and October.  That being said, we do not want to be figuring things out as a major storm bears down on us, and, as such, the Village continues to look for ways to improve and fine-tune our emergency preparedness plans, and we encourage our residents to do the same.  We should all prepare for potential severe weather situations like hurricanes, tropical storms, nor’easters, and abnormal high tide flooding events.  Here are some important tips to keep in mind for your planning:

  • If a hurricane, or another tropical storm, hits and power is interrupted, and with the current pandemic, residents should be prepared to shelter at home.
  • At minimum, everyone should have on hand:
    • 3-days of food
    • 7-days of medication
    • 3-gallons of drinking water per person
    • LED flashlights
    • A battery-powered AM radio.
  • Make sure to have extra cash on hand if a storm is approaching, and be sure your fuel tank is full. Bank ATMs and gas pumps may not work if electricity goes out.
  • If you have pets, have a kit for them too, with items like a carrier, medicine, and ample food supplies.
  • Create a family emergency plan and emergency contact list.

Above, I have listed some of the basics for being prepared for the next storm event.  The Village of Lindenhurst is here to assist our residents in any way we can be of help.  Our community continues to be “Lindy Strong”, helping one another in times of need.  I can never state it enough, I am proud to be your Mayor.

Eagle Scout Project Dedication

Anthony Chiarelli, of Troop 60, recently completed his Eagle Scout Project by constructing a Memorial Garden at Lindenhurst Village Park.  Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “Not every scout makes Eagle.  It takes hard work, extreme focus, and dedication to achieve Eagle Scout.  So, thank you, Anthony, for the construction of this beautiful Memorial Garden, which you dedicated in memory of my beloved wife, Helen Lavorata.”

2020 Summer Rec Program Comes to an End

The annual Village Summer Recreation Camp recently concluded at Village Park. With reduced enrollment and strict CDC & Board of Health protocols in effect, the campers certainly had a summer of fun in the sun. Village Partners with Johnson Controls

The Village of Lindenhurst recently teamed up with Johnson Controls in a major Energy Savings Performance contract.  With goals that include sourcing project funding, addressing deferred maintenance, and setting the standard for efficiency, the Village will undergo a community-wide initiative for sustainability.  The $5.8 million agreement is guaranteed by Johnson Controls to generate $8.3 million in energy cost savings over 20 years, helping the Village achieve long-term budget neutrality.  The Village is financing the project through a low-interest loan from Sterling Bank, rather than bonding.

The Village will lease the equipment from Johnson Controls for 20 years before it takes ownership.  Since it is a lease program, it doesn’t count toward the Village’s debt load and won’t raise taxes.  The project will be paid over time through its guaranteed savings, empowering the Village to focus resources on community wellness and services.

The project, guaranteed to be completed within 14 months, encompasses 11 buildings across the Village, two parks, and the marina.  LED lighting will be installed within municipality facilities and in outdoor community spaces, generating $31,000 in lighting rebates.  To further maximize the energy efficiency effort, the Rainbow Center’s aged boiler will be replaced with a new high-efficiency boiler, and electric car charging stations will be installed at Village Hall.  For energy renewability, solar PV systems will be constructed on facility rooftops, as well as the rooftop of a new carport in the Village’s commuter rail parking lot.

Johnson Controls experts will also help the Village develop innovative waste oil heating practices, converting used truck oil into efficient energy for the community.
