MAYOR’S MESSAGE

A MESSAGE FROM LINDENHURST MAYOR MICHAEL LAVORATA

With the current predictions of Tropical Storm Elsa heading towards Lindenhurst, I think it is appropriate to remind our residents to be prepared. Here are some important tips to keep in mind for your planning:

  • If a tropical storm, or hurricane, hits and power is interrupted, residents should be prepared to shelter at home. At minimum, everyone should have on hand:
    o 3-days of food
    o 7-days of medication
    o 3-gallons of drinking water per person
    o LED flashlights
    o A battery-powered AM radio.
  •  Make sure to have extra cash on hand if a storm is approaching, and be sure your fuel tank is full. Bank ATMs and gas pumps may not work if electricity goes out.
  • If you have pets, have a kit for them too, with items like a carrier, medicine, and ample food supplies.
  • Secure, or bring indoors, any outdoor furniture, umbrellas, grills, etc.
  • Create a family emergency plan and emergency contact list. Here are some important emergency numbers to have on hand:

    Above, I have listed some of the basics for being prepared for a storm event. The Village of Lindenhurst is here to assist our residents in any way we can be of help.

SUMNER SAWYER ACHIEVES EAGLE SCOUT RANK

Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata recently recognized Sumner Sawyer, from Boy Scouts of America Troop 60, on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.  Sumner completed the required 21 merit badges, and a major service project in order to earn this honor.

 

Mayor Lavorata said, “The honor and distinction of the Eagle Scout rank can only be achieved through hard work and commitment to the ideals of Scouting.  Congratulations to Sumner on this achievement!”  Trustee Joan M. Masterson said, “On behalf of the entire Village Board, we congratulate you on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and we wish you continued success in all of your endeavors.”

Village Board Meetings are now open for public in-person attendance. The option to attend via zoom is still available and will be listed in the public meetings calendar.

Next Village Board Meeting is Tuesday, July 13th, 2:30pm at Village Hall.

Message from the Village – Updated 7/2/21

This is another update on our response to the incident on June 22, 2021 involving the improper removal of certain parrot nests from Village Park.  As you may know, this unapproved action resulted in the unneeded loss of bird life which could have been avoided.  The Mayor and Village Board are deeply saddened and offended by the unprofessional actions of our contractor and the subcontractor resulting in this inhumane loss.  Ironically, this cost-neutral, innovative, green-energy project was intended to protect the environment.  We have met with our Village contractor, Johnson Controls, and shortly expect a report of their findings as to what happened.  We also believe that, at least based on their website, the subcontractor they hired does not appear to be an “animal control specialist” at all.  We have also met with the SCPA and are demanding those responsible be prosecuted.  At no point, until it was too late, was the Village aware that the actions of the subcontractor would harm any bird life.  Fortunately, some of the birds were saved and are being cared for by New York State Licensed Animal Rehabber, Samantha Boyd.  We are supporting that care, and are donating $500.00 towards her work.  Any work on the lighting where the nests were removed will continue to be suspended.

LIRR Announces Brewery Tour

LIRR President Phil Eng held a press conference in the Lindenhurst Downtown to announce the MTA Long Island Rail Road’s new “Long Island Brewery Tour” package.  This escorted tour package includes discounted round-trip rail and bus transportation, beer tastings at Sand City South in Lindenhurst and Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore, and a stop at Patchogue for shopping and dining.  Tour dates are Saturday, July 31 and Saturday, August 21, and adult-only tickets are $63.50.  Visit https://new.mta.info/daytrips for more information.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “What a wonderful partnership between the LIRR and the local business communities.  This is an especially timely event which will help to showcase some of our new and local establishments.  The suggestion to use the LIRR to travel between localities without the need to drive naturally reduces the potential of DWI!  It is a safe and enjoyable way to visit your favorite local breweries, restaurants, and pubs.”

Mayor’s Message – July 2021

For most of our residents, 4th of July celebrations include backyard BBQ’s, swimming, boating with family and friends, and often involve fireworks.  That being said, I would like to remind everyone that fireworks — aerial consumer fireworks, firecrackers and chasers, skyrockets, roman candles, bombs, and metal wire sparklers — are illegal in New York State.

Fireworks are beautiful, but dangerous, and the use of fireworks can often lead to devastating injuries.  An unplanned trip to the emergency room, or worse, can wreck any holiday.

Respecting firework laws and the dangers they were written to avoid is the best way to have a safe celebration with memories that will last a lifetime.  Let us also remember that Independence Day noise can be trying for households with pets, small children, and others.

I would like to wish all Lindenhurst residents and visitors a Happy and Safe 4th of July, and ask that you are all kind and considerate this holiday.

Message from the Village – Updated 6/24

The Village is aware of an incident at Village Park involving the removal of certain parrot nests by a subcontractor of the Village.  The nests were removed as part of an upgrade to the facility’s ballfield lighting.  The Village received complaints that the nests were not removed in a professional manner resulting in the loss of a number of parrots.  We have reported the matter to the proper authorities for a full investigation.  We have also demanded a complete report from the responsible contractor.

This action regrettably resulted in the unnecessary loss of bird life which could have been avoided.  First, be aware the Mayor and Village Board are appalled at the callous and unprofessional actions of our contractor and the subcontractor resulting in this inhumane loss.  As you may know by way of history, the Village hired a contractor, Johnson Controls, a nationally respected leader in the field of energy conservation as part of an innovative Village wide cost neutral green energy initiative.  Part of this contract included the upgrade of lighting at Villages Park.  Johnson Controls in turn hired an animal control specialist to responsibly remove certain parrot’s nests from the lighting so the work could be performed and supervised the activity as the general contractor.  At no point, until it was too late, was the Village aware that the actions of the animal control specialist and subcontractor would harm any bird life.  The Village immediately self-reported the matter to the police, ASPCA and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.  We requested a thorough and complete investigation and demanded that those responsible are held accountable as we deal with this terrible loss.

Fire Departments Receive 2021 Yale Award

Lindenhurst Public Schools Superintendent, Dan Giordano, recently awarded the 2021 Yale Award, to the Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst Fire Departments.  The annual award is given to outstanding members of the Lindenhurst Community.  Superintendent Giordano, along with the unanimous support of the Lindenhurst Board of Education, chose the Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst Fire Departments as this year’s honorees for their service and duty above self, keeping our community safe during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

 

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The men and women of the Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst Fire Departments are so deserving of this award for their outstanding dedication to our community during this unprecedented health crisis.
