Village Maintains High Credit Rating

September 30, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

Moody’s Investors Service has recently notified the Village of Lindenhurst that the Village continues to maintain “a high quality credit position” and an Aa3 credit rating.  “We are very pleased Moody’s has verified that the Village’s fiscal management is strong and our overall financial picture very positive” stated Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata.

According to Moody’s, the Village’s debt and pension burdens are low.  In addition the U.S. median for similar debt and pension burden is higher than that of the Village.

Trustee RJ Renna stated “Our excellent bond rating enables the Village, at a very low cost burden to our taxpayers, to finance projects like the Johnson Controls Energy Savings Performance contract — which included green-initiative improvements throughout the Village, including the new Solar Carport at the Commuter Parking Lot — and the purchase of a new Hook & Ladder truck for the Lindenhurst Fire Department, further ensuring the protection and safety of our residents.  This is possible because we work hard each day to maintain a balanced budget and operate within our fiscal abilities.”

According to Trustee Patrick Pichichero, “The Moody’s report confirms that we have run a strong financial program over the past few years, even during the economic downturn and the burdens imposed on Lindenhurst by the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Our surpluses and fund balances remain positive and overall debt negligible.”

Moody’s also stated that the economy and tax base and the financial position of the Village are very healthy.  “This municipal rating is comparable to your personal credit score; the better the score, the better the interest rate you get,” said Mayor Lavorata.  “The Village is very proud to receive this bond rating, for it reassures our residents that the Village is a vigilant steward of our tax dollars.”

LINDENHURST REMEMBERS

September 16, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

On the beautiful evening of September 11th, Lindenhurst residents gathered at the 9-11 Memorial Garden to remember those from our community who passed twenty years ago on September 11, 2001, those First Responders who have since passed from Ground Zero related sickness, and the 13 U.S. Soldiers who died in the terrorist attack at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan.  The memorial service was a reflective time of earnest prayers, respectful moments of silence, moving music, and heartfelt words from our local elected officials.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “We will never forget the families that lost loved ones on September 11th, and from Ground Zero related ailments.”

Pictured here are Mayor Lavorata, and former Mayor Lynda Distler, reading the mission statement of the Lindenhurst Remembers 9-11 Memorial Garden.

A MESSAGE FROM LINDENHURST MAYOR MICHAEL LAVORATA

September 10, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

As I write this message, I hope it finds you safe and dry after another week of rainy weather.

In retrospect, I am so grateful for the incredible work of our Suffolk County Police Department, our Lindenhurst Fire Department & Emergency personnel, Department of Public Works, and Village Hall staff who helped us weather Tropical Storms Ida and Henri.  Many of our volunteer firemen were also called in to offer mutual aid to some of our neighboring municipalities who got hit much harder than we here in Lindenhurst.  Their professionalism and courage never cease to amaze me. Our hearts go out to all those who were devastated by these storms.

On a much happier note, I do want to report that the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce/Village of Lindenhurst “Wednesdays on Wellwood” Block Parties were an overwhelming success!  All enjoyed live music, line dancing, all types of delicious food, local craft beers & meades, shopping with a variety of vendors, and children’s fun and family games.

A big thank you to Trustee RJ Renna and Chamber President Jo Ann Boettcher, and all the Chamber members who worked so hard to make the event a tremendous success!  Thank you also to our Department of Public Works and Public Safety staff.

As always, I remain grateful to serve as your Mayor.

Overdose Awareness Day

September 9, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

International Overdose Awareness Day marked its 21st anniversary on August 31st.  Its purpose is to raise awareness of overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends and spread the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.  Over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic and opioid crisis have converged, and overdose fatalities, that had fallen in recent years, seem to be heading back to an all-time high.

Community Cares groups from Lindenhurst, Town of Babylon, and Copiague, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department, held a “Drive-Up & Drop-Off” event for unused, unwanted, expired medicine, followed by a Candlelight Vigil.  The safe disposal of medicines helps to prevent the drugs from falling into the hands of people who might abuse them.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition event and Candlelight Vigil sends a strong message to current and former substance users that they are loved, valued, and that overdose death is preventable. The vigil was also a time to remember, without stigma, those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of those who have lost loved ones due to substance abuse.”

Pictured here (left to right) are: Legislative Aide Anne Parmely from NYS Senator Phil Boyle’s Office, Mayor Michael Lavorata, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Copiague Community Cares’ Sharon Fattoruso, Lindenhurst Community Cares’ Lori-Ann Novello, and TJ Hatter from the NYS Attorney General’s Office.

9-11 CANDLELIGHT REMEMBRANCE SERVICE

August 31, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

September 11, 2001, will live in the mind of every American throughout time. America will never forget 9/11/01.  Lindenhurst will never forget.  September is a time to remember all that was lost to us that day: our sense of security, our peace, our innocence, our belief that we were safe beyond such random violence.  Most of all, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, and specifically, the eight Lindenhurst residents that lost or gave their lives that horrific day.

This year, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding our 20th Year Candlelight Remembrance Service beginning at 7:00PM on Saturday, September 11th, 2021 at the Village’s 9-11 Memorial Garden, located on the south side of Lindenhurst Village Park, on Byrd Street between Irmisch Avenue and Heling Boulevard.  All are invited to attend.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “It would be an honor to have you join us as we mark the 20th anniversary of 9-11 and pause to remember.”  For further information about the program, call Lindenhurst Village Hall at 631-957-7500.
