JOHNSON CONTROLS LIGHTING PROJECT – PROTECTING THE MONK PARAKEETS (QUAKER PARROTS)

December 17, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

Village of Lindenhurst – Johnson Controls Lighting Project

Protecting the Monk Parakeets (Quaker Parrots)

Over the next few weeks, our teams will be performing essential upgrade and maintenance work on the sports field lights to provide more reliable, energy efficient and effective lighting so that our community can maximize use of the fields.

To minimize disruption to the Monk Parakeet colonies on the lighting poles and to safely perform the work, the Village of Lindenhurst and its contractor Johnson Controls have been working closely with noted Monk Parakeet expert Alison Fragale and local bird volunteer Nancy Goldstein.

With their guidance, we are taking the following steps help ensure the birds are well-treated:

Timing

By performing the work in December, well after breeding season closes in October we minimize the potential presence of eggs or hatchlings.

Safety

Our teams will create noise to cause the birds to temporarily leave the nests for nearby trees. They will return once the work is done.

Avoidance

Where possible the work will be performed without touching the nests.

On-call Recovery

Our teams have been given guidance on how to tend for any bird that is unable to fend for itself, and we have volunteers on call to rescue birds and take them to sanctuary.

Mayor’s Message – December 15, 2021

December 15, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

A mask mandate for shops and other indoor spaces in New York State took effect on Monday, December 13th to confront a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.  Governor Hochul’s mandate requires masks to be worn in all indoor public buildings, unless the businesses or venues implement a vaccine requirement.  The mask mandate will be in effect until January 15, 2022.

At this stage, Lindenhurst residents have no other choice but to comply with the Governor’s mask mandate.  I am in favor everyone doing everything possible to keep ourselves and each other healthy.  I am very impressed that many of our Lindenhurst residents have already gotten vaccinated and have taken common-sense steps to deal with this never-ending pandemic. Our local businesses, who have already suffered so much already, are also working to keep the public safe. We are all feeling the effects of “pandemic fatigue”, but with the Delta and Omicron variants still very strong, we must be vigilant.  As your Mayor, I appreciate your patience and cooperation through this next phase. We are “Lindenhurst Strong”, and we will see it through and endure.

Lindenhurst DPW Surprises Young Resident

December 9, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

LINDENHURST D.P.W. SURPRISES YOUNG RESIDENT

A sanitation crew from the Village of Lindenhurst recently met one of their biggest fans, two-year old Angel.  Angel’s grandmother, Melody, had contacted the Village to let them know how much Angel loves trucks, and how he waits eagerly by the window on pick-up days to see the Village garbage truck in action, and to wave at the crew.  In response, the Village did what they do best — go the extra mile!  The Mayor & Village Board, Village Administration, and the Department of Public Works jumped into action and conspired to give Angel a day he would always remember.

On a recent morning, instead of just waving from the window, Angel was invited out to meet the sanitation crew, and was made an honorary Laborer.  Delighted to see a real garbage truck up close, Angel was even given the honor of activating the garbage press (with assistance), and received high-fives all around from the crew for his efforts!  As a special treat, Village Officials presented Angel with a toy garbage truck imprinted with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst name and Official Village Seal.

Trustee Patrick M. Pichichero said, “What an honor it was to see Angel’s eyes light up when the Village presented him with a toy replica of the Village garbage truck.  We sincerely hope we helped make Angel’s holiday special.”

Lindenhurst Announces Inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Parade

December 9, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

There has never been a St Patrick’s Parade in the Village of Lindenhurst, but that will change in just a few months. Lindenhurst Trustee RJ Renna and Belfast Gastro Pub Proprietor David Crowe have announced plans for the First Annual Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade to take place on Saturday, March 26th, 2022 at 11:00 am. The event will include numerous bag pipe bands, Irish dancers, marching units, and fire department and school marching bands.

“The Parade Committee has lots of fun things planned, including a “Green Tie Affair” on March 5th.  Stay tuned for more information!” said Parade Committee Secretary Katie Schrader.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I would like to publicly thank Trustee Renna and David Crowe, who partnered to see their vision of a St. Patrick’s Parade become a reality.”

Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle added, “As we continue to revitalize our annual Lindenhurst traditions, I am excited as we add this new tradition — another family day of fun and festivities in our Downtown Business District.”

Pictured here (left to right) are Chief of Staff for NYS Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre Brendan Cunningham, Town of Babylon Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Belfast Gastro Pub Proprietor David Crowe, Parade Committee Secretary Katie Schrader, Belfast Gastro Pub Co-Owner Bobby Fortier, Trustee RJ Renna, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Patrick M. Mayor’s Message – December 2021

December 3, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

As the weather changes, I would like to remind residents that driving during the winter months can be extremely dangerous, especially when it snows.  However, driving with extra caution, and adhering to the rules of the road, can help ensure safe passage for all motorists.  Motorists can enhance safety, visibility, and mobility throughout the season by making sure that our vehicles are winter-ready.  Before driving, be sure to clear all windows, lights, and external mirrors of snow and ice, be observant of roadway conditions, and proceed at appropriate speeds.

In the event of a snow emergency, be alert to weather advisories.  If you do not need to travel, stay put until the roads are cleared of snow and ice.  If you must drive:  1) Plan alternate ways and allow extra time to travel to main routes and to your place of destination; 2) Slow down, brake slowly, and allow plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you; 3) During times of reduced visibility, watch for pedestrians, bicycles, and disabled vehicles; 4) Maintain your vehicle properly. Check your car battery and replenish antifreeze and windshield washer fluids. Always keep a flashlight, snowbrush, ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, and an extra set of clothes in your vehicle, and finally, 5) Keep a cell phone and charger handy.

As soon as you are aware that bad weather is on the way, make every effort to keep your car off the street.  This protects your car from being plowed in, or being hit by passing vehicles, and the snowplow has space to safely plow the snow.  In general, when shoveling out the mouth of your driveway, throw the snow to the right of your driveway (when facing the street).  Throwing or plowing snow into the road can create a patch of snow and ice and cause a hazardous condition.  It is unlawful to shovel or dump snow into spaces reserved for handicap parking.

It is important to the Village administration that we continue to hear the ideas, suggestions, and concerns of our residents.  If you have something you would like to share with the Village Board, please contact Village Hall at 631-957-7500 or info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov.

Along with the Board of Trustees, our administrative staff, and all the employees of the Village, we look forward to continuing to serve the Village to the best of our abilities for the betterment of Lindenhurst.

Overhead Wire Cleanup Project

November 22, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

The Village of Lindenhurst will be working with Altice to clean up the overhead cable wires throughout the Village.
If you are aware of a location that has unsafe or unsightly wires in the Village, please send a picture and location details to info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov with the subject being “Unsafe Wires”.
Wires that are considered unsafe or unsightly would include wires that appear much lower than the others connected to the poles or wires that are loose or downed.
Please provide exact location with cross-streets. For example, “Unsightly/Unsafe wires located directly in front of 430 S. Wellwood Ave. between Irving and Herbert Avenues.”
The Public’s assistance with this project will ensure the success of this project!
If you have any questions, please contact the Village of Lindenhurst at (631) 957-7500 or by email at info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov
