Local rock fans recently enjoyed an evening with “The Good Rats” at Lindenhurst Village Square Park. The Village of Lindenhurst sponsors free concerts in the square every Saturday from Memorial Day through most of September. Village Trustee RJ Renna said, “There is some type of entertainment in the downtown every weekend in Lindenhurst. Activities include outdoor concerts, performances at our local theaters, festivals, the Village Farmers Market, and local bands and acoustic artists performing at many of our restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops.” Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle also said, “There are a host of restaurants serving some of the finest food in the area. Lindenhurst is a fantastic destination any day of the week.”

On August 24^th, the Lindenhurst Rotary Club and Village of Lindenhurst sponsored their annual Snapper Derby at the Lindenhurst Marina. Over 80 children participated, all between the ages of 5-12. All of the Derby participants received a hotdog, snack and juice. Bicycles were awarded to two participants who caught the Heaviest Snapper, and to the participant who caught the Most Snappers. Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle said “What a wonderful day of sun, fun, fishing, and family bonding!”. Special thanks to all the Rotarians and Village volunteers for making our Snapper Derby a great success.

In celebration of the Ukraine‘s 28th Anniversary of Independence from the former Soviet Union on August 24, Rev. Olvian N. Popovici and members of the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church of  Lindenhurst gathered at Lindenhurst Village Hall to jointly raise the American flag and the Ukrainian flag in celebrations of the Ukrainian peoples dedication to democratic principles and their unity in aspiring for a better life by securing the rights to free elections and non-violent civic initiatives. Children from the Church sang the National Anthem of the United States and Ukraine as the flags were raised.

5th graders from Harding Avenue Elementary School recently held a car was at Lindenhurst Village Hall. The car wash was a fundraiser for the 5th grade class. Mayor Lavorata stopped by to get his car washed and support the 5th graders!

The Lindenhurst Rotary Club, along with Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, welcomed District Governor Shawn Weis to Lindenhurst. The District Governor spoke about worldwide and district Rotary International events and how important it is that Rotary clubs be in touch with the communities they are a part of. District Governor Weis stated, “Rotarians are people of action and want to fulfill community needs.” In recent years, Rotary clubs have been focused on taking on projects that are environmentally friendly.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society, with Village Historian Anna Jaeger and Town of Babylon Historian Mary Cascone, will be releasing a book, From Breslau to Lindenhurst 1870 to 1923. The book covers the history of Lindenhurst and will be available in September 2018.

Village of Lindenhurst Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle and Trustee Joan Masterson along with local business leaders, small business owners, and Chamber of Commerce members from various towns and villages attended Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s press conference at Bak & Vogel paint store located on North Wellwood Avenue to urge the New York State Senate to adopt the Internet Fairness and Conformity Act in the 2018 -19 State Budget.

 

In its current state, only online sellers that are located in New York State are required to collect sales tax from New York State residents. This essentially provides a tax free marketplace for online retailers such as Amazon and eBay. Because of this, online retailers can sell their products at a much cheaper and competitive rate than local businesses can. Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle stated during the press conference that is makes it difficult for local merchants, like her family owned and operated Bak & Vogel paint store, to compete with online retailers and because of that, many consumers lean towards online purchases. The Internet Fairness and Conformity Act would require most online retailers to follow the same sales tax collection laws as brick-and-mortar stores, such as Bak & Vogel, do.

The Village of Lindenhurst has started the process of knocking down the blighted properties located at the corner of East Hoffman Avenue and High Street. The three longtime eyesores will be demolished to make way for the development of a municipal parking lot. [Read more…]
