UPDATE NOTICE – 9/5/2023
PILOT TRAFFIC CHANGES ON CATSKILL AVENUE
In July, the Village of Lindenhurst retained Greenman-Pedersen Inc. (GPI) of Babylon, N.Y., an engineering consulting firm, to have their Traffic Engineers review the Catskill Avenue Pilot Program, and make recommendations as to the best way forward. The traffic study has been extended in order to include a study of traffic during the morning and afternoon commute while school is in session. The final traffic study findings will be presented at the next public meeting regarding this topic:
Third Public Meeting Regarding Catskill Avenue Pilot Program
September 26, 2023 at 7:00 PM – Doors Open at 6:30 PM
Rainbow Room (located at the Rainbow Center) 293 Buffalo Avenue
Questions and comments from the public will be heard following the presentation.
Copies of the traffic study will be available at the meeting.
**Copies of this notice were hand delivered by the Department of Public Works to the properties in this area at the beginning of September.
UPDATE NOTICE – 7/14/2023
Please be advised, in response to the concerns of residents expressed at the June 29th Public Meeting, the Village Board has retained Greenman-Pedersen Inc. (GPI), of Babylon, N.Y., an engineering consulting firm, to have their Traffic Engineers review the Catskill Avenue Pilot Program, and make recommendations as to the best way forward. Therefore, please be advised that the Pilot Program will remain while GPI Traffic Engineers are working on the study. The Traffic Engineers will be doing the following within the next week:
Along westbound NY 27/Sunrise Highway, a left turn lane to Catskill Avenue is in place. The Village recently closed access to Catskill Avenue and 41st Street along the south side of Sunrise Highway. Some residents along Buffalo Avenue have raised concerns about the increase in traffic, particularly truck traffic, since the aforementioned closures were put in place. GPI is being retained to conduct traffic counts to determine the volume and vehicle mix of U-turns at the Catskill Avenue median opening and their destination along eastbound Sunrise Highway. This will include the number of vehicles and vehicle type that turn right onto Buffalo Ave, turn illegally at 41st and 42nd Avenues, turn into businesses or continue east of Buffalo Ave.
The Traffic Study will last for two weeks, and a report is expected within two weeks of its conclusion. The public will be notified when the report is completed, and will be available for review. Please note, the Village Board will not make any permanent changes to the traffic flow without an additional Public Meeting, with input from the GPI Traffic Engineers and the residents.
Thank you for everyone’s patience in this matter. I trust that the final decision on the traffic flow will be resolved to the benefit and satisfaction of the majority of our residents. Again, thank you.
This notice will also be hand delivered to homes in the area, shared via the Village’s Genasys alert system, posted to social media, and posted to the Village’s website. Feel free to share this information with your neighbors.
9-11 CANDLELIGHT REMEMBRANCE SERVICE
LOCATION CHANGE: Due to weather, the 9/11 Memorial Service location has been changed to the Fire Department Main House, 225 South Wellwood Avenue.
Please join us at 7:00 PM.
September 11, 2001 will live in the mind of every American throughout time. America will never forget 9/11/01. Lindenhurst will never forget. September 11th is a time to remember all that was lost to us that day: our sense of security, our peace, our innocence, our belief that we were safe beyond such random violence. Most of all, we remember those who lost their lives, specifically, the eight Lindenhurst residents that lost or gave their lives that horrific day.
This year, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding our 22nd Year Candlelight Remembrance Service beginning at 7:00PM on Monday, September 11th, 2023 at the Lindenhurst Fire Department Main House, 225 South Wellwood Avenue.
Mayor Michael Lavorata said “It would be an honor to have you join us as we mark the 22nd anniversary of 9-11 and pause to remember.”

Pilot Traffic Changes on Catskill Avenue
Update 7/6/2023 – As a result of the public meeting, the Village has hired a traffic engineer to conduct a traffic study of the pilot program changes. The changes will remain in effect while the study is being conducted.
Update 6/23/2023 – The next public information meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 29th at 7:00 PM at the Rainbow Room, 293 Buffalo Avenue.
Back in December 2022, the Village of Lindenhurst held a public informational meeting to discuss proposed traffic safety measures to make a section of Catskill Avenue, from 33rd Street to North Strong Avenue, a One- Way Traffic Only southbound street, and to stop southbound traffic onto Catskill Avenue from Sunrise Highway. Based on feedback from local residents at that community meeting, the Village is now planning a “Pilot Program” to temporarily test the new proposed traffic changes.
THEREFORE, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, beginning June 12, 2023, a roadblock will be installed southbound on Catskill Avenue at 40th Street, which will prohibit southbound traffic exiting Sunrise Highway from using Catskill Avenue. Additionally, Catskill Avenue at North Strong Avenue will be closed off, prohibiting traffic from leaving North Strong Avenue onto Catskill Avenue and traffic from Catskill Avenue heading to North Strong Avenue. A roadblock will also be placed on the western side of Catskill Avenue at 32nd Street with a “NO OUTLET” sign so that traffic is aware there is no exit to North Strong Avenue. These temporary traffic measures will be in place until July 3, 2023. Please visit the Village website for a visual map of the changes – www.villageoflindenhurstny.gov
After July 3, the Village will schedule another public information meeting to solicit community feedback on the resulting pros and cons of this pilot program.
