Mayor’s Message – October 2022

September 29, 2022 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

The Village of Lindenhurst is preparing to begin work on a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Wellwood Avenue, in the heart of the Downtown Business District. Funded partly through a Suffolk County Jumpstart Grant, this project will include the installation of pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalk bulbouts and median extensions, repaving and curbing of the road, and restriping and reangling of parking spaces.

An additional component of this “facelift” to our Downtown, will be the planned removal, relocation, and replanting of trees along Wellwood Avenue. Many tree species that were planted long ago have turned out to be unsuitable for growth and flourishment in the Downtown. Dead and dying trees will be identified for removal, as well as trees that have damaged the sidewalks, creating pedestrian hazards, and trees that are interfering with wires.

As the Village creates a plan for the relocation of old trees and planting of new ones, we are committed to planting two trees throughout the Village for every one removed. The species of new trees to be planted will be chosen for their longevity; ones that will not become too large and cause future damage. As we map out the plan for Wellwood Avenue, we will take into account such things as, choosing sites that will work better for the viewing of store signs, and the overall beautification of the Village Downtown. Once we lay the locations out, it is possible that our Village Downtown will have even more trees!

We will also make sure that all tree memorial placards that need to be removed during the process will be put back, and families and loved ones will be notified if any are to be relocated.

As your Mayor, and on behalf of the Village Board, we are committed to keeping the planting, preserving, and caring of trees as a top priority for the Village of Lindenhurst. Reducing the carbon footprint is one of the greatest challenges of our generation, and trees are here to fight with us. Let us build a greener future together!

I remain proud to serve as your Mayor. Let us continue to work to ensure Lindenhurst will be a great place to live, work, and play, for many generations to come.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Lavorata, Mayor

Mayor’s Message – September 2022

September 15, 2022 by Katie McCaffrey

A MESSAGE FROM LINDENHURST MAYOR MICHAEL LAVORATA

On Sunday, September 11, 2022, the Village of Lindenhurst held their “Lindenhurst Remembers” 21st Year Candlelight Memorial Service. Many Village community organizations, members of the Lindenhurst Fire Department, and elected officials came together to pay solemn tribute to those who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001, and to remember those who heroically helped in the rescue recovery efforts that followed at Ground Zero.

This year’s remembrance service included a special dedication in acknowledgment of Former Mayor Lynda Distler, who served as Mayor from 2000-2004. In gratitude for her leadership, vision and dedication to overseeing the planning and construction of the Lindenhurst 9-11 Memorial Garden, the East Gate of the Memorial Garden was dedicated as the “Mayor Lynda Distler Gateway”. In the wake of those devastating days of 9-11-01, Lynda had a vision of constructing a 9-11 Memorial Garden as a place to remember and honor those whose lives were lost, and to provide a sanctuary of peace and reflection for their loves ones, and the community. Today, our 9-11 Memorial Garden is a hidden gem in our Village where you can spend time in prayer and solitude.

Whenever I think about September 11, 2001, I picture First Responders running into burning buildings, putting themselves at risk to save lives. I recall images of courage and humanity. I think of the bravery and selflessness shown that day, and in the many days that followed, by first responders and civilians alike. Every year, as our Lindenhurst Community gathers to remember the dreadful events of that day, I am struck anew with awe and gratitude for all those who rose to the call to serve and protect.

The Village of Lindenhurst lost eight of our neighbors at the World Trade Center that day, and as of today, ten Lindenhurst residents have died from Ground Zero related illness. Lindenhurst Firefighter George “Papa” Oates, who died earlier this year from complications from a Ground Zero related illness, was added to the First Responders Monument located in the 9-11 Memorial Garden. The Lindenhurst Community mourns his loss, and is so grateful for his service.

My final thought is that, if we have learned nothing else from the tragedy of September 11, 2001 and living through the pandemic, it is that life is short, and there is no time for hate.

Once again, I am humbled and proud to serve as your Mayor. Enjoy the beautiful autumn weather and all the Fall activities Lindenhurst has to offer. May God continue to bless our Lindenhurst Community, and keep us “Lindy Strong”!

Mayor’s Message – August 2022

August 25, 2022 by Katie McCaffrey

With the fall season upon us, we also move into hurricane season. I think it is appropriate to remind our residents to be prepared. Here are some important tips to keep in mind for your planning:

  • If a tropical storm, or hurricane, hits and power is interrupted, residents should be prepared to shelter at home. At a minimum, everyone should have on hand:
    • 3 days of food
    • 7 days of medication
    • 3 gallons of drinking water per person
    • LED flashlights
    • A battery-powered AM radio
  • Make sure to have extra cash on hand if a storm is approaching, and be sure your fuel tank is full. Banks ATMs and gas pumps may not work if electricity goes out.
  • If you have pets, have a kit for them too, with items like a carrier, medicine, and ample food supplies.
  • Secure, or bring indoors, any outdoor furniture, umbrellas, grills, etc.
  • Create a family emergency plan and emergency contact list. Here are some important emergency numbers to have on hand:
    • Fire/Rescue (631) 226-1212
    • Police Emergency 911
    • Village Hall (631) 957-7500
    • Department of Public Works (631) 957-7520

Antique Car Show held in Village

August 4, 2022 by Katie McCaffrey

La Famiglia Cadillac Club and Empire Muscle Cars recently held an antique car show at the Lindenhurst Village Square. Both clubs came together for the event, and displayed their antique models, while also raising donations for the Long Island Alzheimer and Dementia Center. A total of $1,370.00 was raised from the event.
Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “Seeing the display of antique cars, and having the opportunity to raise donations for a great cause– it was an amazing day.”
The antique car show will be back at Lindenhurst Village Square, located at the intersection of North Wellwood Avenue and East Hoffman Avenue, on September 24, 2022. If you enjoy viewing classic cars, then this is an event you would not want to miss!

Mayor’s Message – July 2022

July 22, 2022 by Katie McCaffrey

In recent years, the number of trees planted in the Village of Lindenhurst has been far less than the number of trees removed.  Many trees have been lost due to nor’easters, hurricanes, and wind storms over the past several years.  The Village has also had to take down trees that were causing uprooted sidewalks, dangerous conditions, and, in some cases, diseased trees.  As the Mayor of our Village, I am announcing that the on-going removal of trees, without replanting new ones, is going to stop.  The Village’s new policy will be that, for every tree taken down or removed, a new tree will be planted.

There are many benefits to having trees planted in our Village.  It is no secret that our air quality is not what it used to be.  Harmful greenhouse gases have been building up in the atmosphere, creating a dangerous bubble.  The majority of greenhouse gas is made up of carbon dioxide.  The benefits of planting trees to absorb these gases is truly a no-brainer.  Trees provide cleaner air by adding oxygen, and soaking up carbon dioxide, creating cleaner, healthier air for us to breathe.  Trees are our biggest tool in the struggle to lower atmosphere carbon, and mitigate climate change.

Many residents ask the question, how do I know if my street tree should be removed?  Residents can call the Department of Public Works (631-957-7520), and a Foreman will make an inspection of the tree to determine if it meets the Village criteria for tree removal.  Trees will be removed if they are determined to be dead, dying, diseased, or dangerous.  If the tree does not meet these criteria, the tree will not be removed.

As your Mayor, I cannot emphasize this enough – planting, preserving, and caring for trees will again become a top priority for the Village of Lindenhurst.  Tree preservation will complement our overall green initiative, which has included the installation of a solar car port at the LIRR commuter parking lot, solar panels at the Rainbow Community Center & Village Hall, and the conversion of Village street and ball-field lights to energy-efficient LED lighting,
