VILLAGE BREAKS GROUND ON SHORE ROAD PARK STORAGE SHED PROJECT

November 6, 2023 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

The Village of Lindenhurst recently broke ground to make way for a new storage shed at Shore Road Park.  Using funds the Village received through ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act), the Village intends for the storage shed not only house Department of Public Works park maintenance equipment, but to also be used as a supplemental storage facility for the youth sports leagues that utilize the Shore Road Park fields.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The Village of Lindenhurst has put careful planning into allocating our ARPA funds, and we are proud that this project will be of benefit to both the Village and the community.”

The Lindenhurst Historical Society is a recipient of a NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Grant Program: Preservation Supplies Award

October 31, 2023 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

Funding provides the Lindenhurst Historical Society with an additional resource to support our overall conservation and preservation plan

Lindenhurst, NY – The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to announce the Society is a recent recipient of a NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Grant Program: Preservation Supplies Award.  Grant funds were utilized to purchase a variety of collection management supplies, chiefly archival grade storage boxes designed to safely store clothing, textiles and other artifacts.  The NYSCA/ GHHN Conservation Grant Program: Preservation Supplies and Site Assessment Grant Program is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  Additional funding from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation supports projects from Long Island and New York City.

This year, the Lindenhurst Historical Society is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Anniversary.   Founded in 1948 by residents that imagined not only a vibrant and robust Society of likeminded, community oriented visionaries who would perpetually foster the society’s core mission to preserve and celebrate the community’s rich and diverse history, but would continually seek and develop opportunities to conserve and protect the community’s historically valuable sites as well as its collection of historical objects, textiles, artworks and artifacts.

“As stewards of this collection,” stated Lindenhurst Village Museum Director Marianne Guglieri, “the funding provides the Lindenhurst Historical Society with an additional resource to support our overall conservation and preservation plan and further enhance the goal of using proper collection management supplies to protect the collection.”

“From our inception, the Lindenhurst Historical Society has enjoyed a valuable and mutually advantageous partnership with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst,” said Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger, “and we continue to be united in a shared vision to preserve.”   Ms. Jaeger noted the partnership has produced three instances whereby buildings relevant to Lindenhurst’s founding and subsequent development as the 4th largest village in New York State were protected from demolition and preserved as museums.  The museum buildings are all historically valuable in their own right but also provide intrinsic and germane exhibit space along with much needed storage for the Society’s collection of local artifacts, objects and historical items.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to manage all three buildings as museums; The Lindenhurst Historical House Museumat 272 South Wellwood Avenue and at Irmisch Park on South Broadway, the 1901 Restored Long Island Railroad Depot and Freight House Museum and The Old Village Hall Museum.    Currently, the Historical House Museum and the Old Village Hall Museum are undergoing renovations, suspending museum exhibits and activities.  The pause has allowed the Society to concentrate on the collections conservation.  This Preservation Supplies Award contributes to that effort.

More information is available on the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s Facebook page – Breslau Lindy or by calling (631) 226-0209.

NY-Forward Survey

October 11, 2023 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

The Lindenhurst New York-Forward (NYF) Local Planning Committee is evaluation projects proposed for inclusion in the NYF plan and want your input!

Please complete the survey at the link below (or scan the QR code) to provide your feedback on the projects that have been proposed for funding.

http://www.tinyURL.com/LindenhurstNYFsurvey

The deadline to complete the survey is November 3, 2023.

For more information about the NYF process, please visit www.lindenhurstnyf.com

The NY Forward (NYF) proposed project survey has been getting a great response from the community, but seems to have raised some questions about the NYF process.

There was an Open Call for Projects that ended July 26, that allowed public, private (privately owned businesses and property owners), and non-profit project sponsors could submit a proposal. These proposals have been reviewed by the Local Planning Committee (LPC) and that committee will vote on what projects should be part of the Strategic Investment Plan that gets submitted to the State. From there, the State will determine the projects from the Strategic Investment Plan that will receive NYF funding.

The image below will hopefully clarify the types of projects that are eligible for NYF funding and how the proposed projects are ultimately selected by New York State for funding.

The Village does not select what projects are funded and how this money is spent. The Village has, however, submitted multiple projects for consideration by NYS that would benefit the community.

For more information on the NYF process and to read the summaries of prior LPC meetings, please visit www.lindenhurstnyf.com

The next LPC meeting will be held on October 24 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the Rainbow Room, 293 Buffalo Avenue.

If you have questions, emails can be sent to lindenhurstnyf@gmail.com of info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov.

PILOT TRAFFIC CHANGES ON CATSKILL AVENUE

UPDATE – 9/27/2023 The traffic study that was presented at the third public meeting can be downloaded below. Note that the traffic study looked at the traffic impact from vehicles that were using the turnaround on Sunrise Highway at Catskill Avenue.

If you would like to submit questions or comments, please send an email to info@villageoflindenhurstny.gov.

Catskill Avenue Traffic Study

UPDATE NOTICE – 9/5/2023

PILOT TRAFFIC CHANGES ON CATSKILL AVENUE

In July, the Village of Lindenhurst retained Greenman-Pedersen Inc. (GPI) of Babylon, N.Y., an engineering consulting firm, to have their Traffic Engineers review the Catskill Avenue Pilot Program, and make recommendations as to the best way forward. The traffic study has been extended in order to include a study of traffic during the morning and afternoon commute while school is in session. The final traffic study findings will be presented at the next public meeting regarding this topic:

Third Public Meeting Regarding Catskill Avenue Pilot Program
September 26, 2023 at 7:00 PM – Doors Open at 6:30 PM
Rainbow Room (located at the Rainbow Center) 293 Buffalo Avenue

Questions and comments from the public will be heard following the presentation.

Copies of the traffic study will be available at the meeting.

**Copies of this notice were hand delivered by the Department of Public Works to the properties in this area at the beginning of September.

UPDATE NOTICE – 7/14/2023

Please be advised, in response to the concerns of residents expressed at the June 29th Public Meeting, the Village Board has retained Greenman-Pedersen Inc. (GPI), of Babylon, N.Y.,  an engineering consulting firm, to have their Traffic Engineers review the Catskill Avenue Pilot Program, and make recommendations as to the best way forward.  Therefore, please be advised that the Pilot Program will remain while GPI Traffic Engineers are working on the study.  The Traffic Engineers will be doing the following within the next week:

Along westbound NY 27/Sunrise Highway, a left turn lane to Catskill Avenue is in place.  The Village recently closed access to Catskill Avenue and 41st Street along the south side of Sunrise Highway.  Some residents along Buffalo Avenue have raised concerns about the increase in traffic, particularly truck traffic, since the aforementioned closures were put in place. GPI is being retained to conduct traffic counts to determine the volume and vehicle mix of U-turns at the Catskill Avenue median opening and their destination along eastbound Sunrise Highway.  This will include the number of vehicles and vehicle type that turn right onto Buffalo Ave, turn illegally at 41st and 42nd Avenues, turn into businesses or continue east of Buffalo Ave.

The Traffic Study will last for two weeks, and a report is expected within two weeks of its conclusion.  The public will be notified when the report is completed, and will be available for review.  Please note, the Village Board will not make any permanent changes to the traffic flow without an additional Public Meeting, with input from the GPI Traffic Engineers and the residents.

Thank you for everyone’s patience in this matter.  I trust that the final decision on the traffic flow will be resolved to the benefit and satisfaction of the majority of our residents. Again, thank you.

This notice will also be hand delivered to homes in the area, shared via the Village’s Genasys alert system, posted to social media, and posted to the Village’s website. Feel free to share this information with your neighbors.

9-11 CANDLELIGHT REMEMBRANCE SERVICE

September 1, 2023 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

LOCATION CHANGE: Due to weather, the 9/11 Memorial Service location has been changed to the Fire Department Main House, 225 South Wellwood Avenue.

Please join us at 7:00 PM.

September 11, 2001 will live in the mind of every American throughout time.  America will never forget 9/11/01.  Lindenhurst will never forget.  September 11th is a time to remember all that was lost to us that day: our sense of security, our peace, our innocence, our belief that we were safe beyond such random violence.  Most of all, we remember those who lost their lives, specifically, the eight Lindenhurst residents that lost or gave their lives that horrific day.

This year, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding our 22nd Year Candlelight Remembrance Service beginning at 7:00PM on Monday, September 11th, 2023 at the Lindenhurst Fire Department Main House, 225 South Wellwood Avenue.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said “It would be an honor to have you join us as we mark the 22nd anniversary of 9-11 and pause to remember.”

For further information about the program, call Lindenhurst Village Hall at 631-957-7500.
