The Lindenhurst Historical Society and the Village of Lindenhurst will cohost the unveiling of the 1901 Restored Long Island Rail Road Depot and Freight House Museum’s William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker- Saturday June 8, 2024 at 1 P.M.

Celebrating its 50^th year as a museum, the marker further designates the Depot and the adjoining Freight House as a significant Lindenhurst historic site

Lindenhurst, NY – The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Transportation Marker grant.  The grant funds were utilized to procure a Pomeroy Marker bearing an inscription that indicates the historic significance of the 1901 Restored LIRR Depot and Freight House and the role both the Depot and the Rail Road played in the 1870 founding of the City of Breslau.

The Historic Transportation Marker will be unveiled in a joint ceremony held by the Lindenhurst Historical Society and the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at the 1901 Restored Depot and Freight House located at Irmisch Park at the intersection of South Broadway and South Third Street beginning at 1 P.M.  Included among the speakers helping to unveil the marker are Lindenhurst Village Mayor Mike Lavorata, Lindenhurst Village Trustees Doug Madlon and Maryann Weckerle,  Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger and Town of Babylon Historian Mary Cascone.

Credited as Long Island’s first railroad museum, the Depot and Freight House replicates the Lindenhurst stop on the LIRR, recalling its original location along East Hoffman Avenue, close to the grade crossing at No. Wellwood Ave.

Depot Museum Site Manager Ed “Skip” Meinhold will help host the ceremony.  “We are excited to kick off the Depot’s 50^th Anniversary Year with the Marker’s unveiling,” said Mr. Meinhold. “Our museum staff is looking forward to an exciting summer season at the Depot and hope to culminate our 50th Anniversary year in an even larger celebration this October.”  The 1901 Depot and Freight House Museum  are opened to the public from June thru October on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2:00PM to 4:00PM.  Admission is free.

The Lindenhurst Historical Society has enjoyed a valuable and mutually advantageous partnership with the Inc. Village of Lindenhurst.  United in a shared vision to preserve, the partnership has produced three instances whereby buildings relevant to Breslau’s/ Lindenhurst’s founding and subsequent development as the 4^th largest village in New York State were protected from demolition and preserved as museums.  The Lindenhurst Historical Society is proud to manage all three buildings as museums; The Lindenhurst Historical House Museum (reopening Fall 2024) at 272 South Wellwood Avenue and at Irmisch Park, the 1901 Restored Long Island Railroad Depot and Freight House Museum and the Old Village Hall Museum(reopening Summer 2024).

“All our museum buildings are all historically valuable in their own right,” said Village Historian Anna Jaeger, “but also provide intrinsic and germane exhibit space along with valuable storage for the Society’s collection of local artifacts, objects and historical items.”

Pomeroy Foundation for our commitment to historical accuracy and to our ongoing endeavors to celebrate our community’s rich history,” said Village Museum Director Marianne Guglieri. “We are looking forward to the unveiling and to the community joining us to help celebrate this special event.”

The Village of Lindenhurst will be milling the roadway on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 (Weather Permitting). PLEASE NOTE: All motor vehicles must be off the streets and out of driveways, if usage is required, by 7:00 AM; the streets will be reopened in the late afternoon.

The Village will make every effort to limit your inconvenience and keep the roads passable. Please bear with us as we make these much needed improvements to our village.

If cars are not moved off the roadway, they will be towed.

The Village of Lindenhurst & the United Veterans Council of Lindenhurst Wade-Burns Post 7279 Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), along with American Legion Feustel-Kurdt Post 1120, will host the 2024 Memorial Day Parade & Ceremonies on Monday, May 27, 2024.  This year’s Grand Marshal is surviving Korean War Veteran Thomas Aloisi.

The day of remembrance will begin at 10:00AM with congruent ceremonies by the VFW at Breslau Cemetery and the Lindenhurst Fire Department (LFD) at Fireman’s Memorial Park.  Following their ceremony, the VFW will march west on Newark Street, turn south on Delaware Avenue, and turn west on Charles Street to meet up with the LFD and other parade participants at Fireman’s Memorial Park.  From there, at 11:00AM, the parade will head west on Hartford Street, turn south on North Wellwood Avenue, making a brief stop on South Wellwood Avenue to lay a wreath at the WWI Memorial, and continue to Village Hall, 430 South Wellwood Avenue, where a Memorial Day Observance will take place at approximately 12:00PM.

Marching with our Veterans organizations and the Lindenhurst Fire Department, will be elected officials, the Lindenhurst High School and Middle School marching bands & Junior ROTC, and many local civic organizations & community groups. 

Please join us on Monday, May 27^th as Lindenhurst honors and remembers the brave men and women who died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces. 

*Please note, in the event of rain, the parade will be cancelled and ceremonies will be held at the Lindenhurst Fire Department Main House, 225 South Wellwood Avenue, at 10:00AM.

CLICK HERE to view the presentation from the fourth public meeting regarding the pilot traffic program implemented on Catskill Avenue. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss current conditions and proposed changes for traffic in the area.

During a recent Court of Honor Ceremony for Steven Castiglione, Mayor Michael Lavorata declared April 17^th, 2024 as “Steven Castiglione Day” in the Village of Lindenhurst, and that all residents should celebrate Steven’s outstanding achievement as an Eagle Scout.  For Steven’s Eagle Scout project, he helped beautify a local creek by planting four Butterfly Bushes and two Forsythia Bushes.  Additionally, he built and hung two birdhouses with the help of his family, friends and fellow members of Troop 60.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so proud of Steven’s accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout.  Achieving the distinction of Eagle Scout is no small feat, as it is the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts of America.  It represents the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to the principles of scouting.”
