“Adopt a Senior” Program

The “Adopt A Senior” bus rolled out early on the morning of June 11th to go door-to-door delivering support, surprises, and “Lindy Pride!” to the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2020.  This collaborative community effort, spearheaded by The Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, saw hundreds of our residents, business owners, and community leaders donating their time, money, goods, and services to make this graduation year special for Lindy’s Senior Class.  The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it many challenges and disappointments for these students in their final high school year, but the Lindenhurst Community has come together, with generosity and selfless spirits, to celebrate them and honor this major milestone.  Pictured here with the crew of volunteers are LCC Executive Director Lori Novello, School Superintendent Daniel Giordano, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata.

 

LFD Chiefs Sworn In

The newly-elected Chief and Assistant Fire Chiefs of the Lindenhurst Fire Department were recently officially sworn in to office by Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata.

Mayor Lavorata said, “Congratulations on being re-elected as Chiefs of the Lindenhurst Fire Department, and keep up the great work. I cannot thank the Chiefs and members of the Lindenhurst Fire Department enough for their on-going, selfless service to the Lindenhurst Community.” Trustee RJ Renna added, “They have the courage and training, and they do a great job of responding to emergencies and protecting our community.”

IDA Press Conference on Outdoor Dining

The Village of Lindenhurst is moving to create more space for outdoor dining – including possible closures of some municipal parking lots – to allow patrons of local eateries to safely enjoy “eating out” as businesses continue to slowly reopen. Mayor Michael Lavorata and Trustee RJ Renna have been working with Lindenhurst eateries to temporarily allow restaurants to expand dining out onto public sidewalks, and into public spaces, through a streamlined administrative approval process.

The Town of Babylon IDA recently held a press conference to announce their “Babylon Is Back” program for re-opening Babylon businesses, and to endorse initiatives like this one in Lindenhurst. Support Local Restaurants!

Pictured here with Lindenhurst Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle is Rip Tides Cocktails and Grill owner Carmen Sacente and her family, celebrating the opening of her new business, at 168 Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst, just prior to the start of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Like so many other business owners, Carmen has had to adjust in the face of these current circumstances, with creativity and ingenuity. Many of our restaurants are offering a wide variety of take-out and delivery options, including great specials and family meal packages. Deputy Mayor Weckerle said, “Please continue to support all of our local eateries.” Mayor Michael Lavorata added, “Support restaurants now and dine at them later by buying gift cards. We all need to help support our local Lindenhurst businesses.”

Tribute to John Kehoe

It is with a great deal of heartbreak and sorrow that we mourn the tragic loss of John Kehoe.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Kehoe family.  His untimely death leaves our Lindenhurst community with a deep feeling of sorrow for the loss of such a valued and dedicated employee, and friend.
John was appointed Village Horticulturist on May 15, 1985.  He was an exceptional public employee, and always there when help was needed.  John was at all times courteous, considerate of the welfare of others, and performed his work faithfully and efficiently.  Over his 35 years of service, the Village took on a new, and beautiful, atmosphere.  Through John’s efforts, a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers were expertly planted, watered, and meticulously maintained.
John will be remembered as a highly respected and appreciated member of our Lindenhurst family.  He will be missed by all of us, but will never be forgotten.  His memory will live on every Spring as the Village blooms with all the vibrant colors and beauty of his works.
On April 13th, as Lindenhurst Department of Public Works and Lindenhurst Fire Department trucks lined the streets, a motorcade of family and friends led John to his final resting place in honor.  As a further mark of respect, the flags at all Village of Lindenhurst buildings were displayed at half-staff.
As the Mayor of Lindenhurst, and on behalf of the Lindenhurst Board of Trustees, all of our residents, I would like to publicly recognize the significant and lasting contributions made by John Kehoe to our Lindenhurst community.  We offer his family and friends this sincere expression of condolence.

The Village Mourns John Kehoe

“The Village of Lindenhurst sadly mourns the loss of long time respected horticulturist, John Kehoe, who passed away on April 1, 2020.  John dedicated himself to beautifying and improving the Village for 35 years.  His soft spoken style, knowledge and willingness to serve and help others will be sorely missed by all.  May he rest in peace.”

Christina Renna Foundation – 2020 Angel’s Wish Gala

A host of local officials turned out for the Christina Renna Foundation’s Annual Angel’s Wish Gala. Attending was Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Pat Pichichero, Trustee RJ Renna, along with his parents, Phil and Rene Renna, founders of the foundation, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand. The local officials were there to support the Christina Renna Foundation’s efforts to raise money for their mission to fight childhood cancer. Mayor Lavorata said, “It is important to pause to remember Christina Renna, and all those children who have lost their lives to this horrible disease. May tonight bring hope to those who continue to fight and work towards finding a cure.”

First Boater Safety Course Under Brianna’s Law Held

The Village of Lindenhurst hosted the first Boating Safety Course of the year since the enactment of “Brianna’s Law,” Which took effect on January 1, 2020. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 01-04 presented the course at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. Those who attended received a special visit from Gina Costa-Lieneck, the Long Island mom responsible for helping to make the water ways safer. After Gina’s 11-year old daughter, Brianna, was the victim of a fatal boating accident in 2005, she began the work to bring awareness of the need for mandatory education for all boaters and small craft operators. The new NY State law will phase in requirements that all operators of motorized watercraft must complete a state-approved boating safety coarse. This new rule is designed to help reduce the amount of preventable accident on the water.

HOLIDAY PARADE & TREE LIGHTING

The Village of Lindenhurst kicked off the 2019 holiday season with the annual Fire Department Christmas Parade and Historical Society Tree Lighting Ceremony.  This year, the Historical Society designated long-time Village residents Patrick and Lillian Pigott as the official Christmas Tree Lighters.  Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “The holidays bring colder weather, seasonal joy, and a beautifully adorned downtown with lights and decorated trees in the Village Square.”
