The Village of Lindenhurst held a press conference to announce the start of several projects in the downtown. One of those projects being the construction of bulb-outs on South Wellwood Avenue. The Village will be working with Greenman-Pedersen Inc. and using Suffolk County Jumpstart Grant funds to construct several bulb-outs along South Wellwood Avenue. The bulb-outs will improve pedestrian safety and create a more walkable downtown.

It was also announced that 30,000 were donated to the downtown businesses by Village resident and businessman, Franklin Cruz. These masks will be distributed for use by employees and customers.

Trustee RJ Renna stated, “The funding from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will greatly assist with ongoing improvements to our downtown.” Mayor Lavorata noted that, “This is one more step forward in the revitalization of the Village’s downtown. We look forward to putting these improvements in place with the funds from the Jumpstart grant.”

Anthony Chiarelli, of Troop 60, recently completed his Eagle Scout Project by constructing a Memorial Garden at Lindenhurst Village Park.  Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “Not every scout makes Eagle.  It takes hard work, extreme focus, and dedication to achieve Eagle Scout.  So, thank you, Anthony, for the construction of this beautiful Memorial Garden, which you dedicated in memory of my beloved wife, Helen Lavorata.”

The annual Village Summer Recreation Camp recently concluded at Village Park. With reduced enrollment and strict CDC & Board of Health protocols in effect, the campers certainly had a summer of fun in the sun. The Village of Lindenhurst recently teamed up with Johnson Controls in a major Energy Savings Performance contract.  With goals that include sourcing project funding, addressing deferred maintenance, and setting the standard for efficiency, the Village will undergo a community-wide initiative for sustainability.  The $5.8 million agreement is guaranteed by Johnson Controls to generate $8.3 million in energy cost savings over 20 years, helping the Village achieve long-term budget neutrality.  The Village is financing the project through a low-interest loan from Sterling Bank, rather than bonding.

The Village will lease the equipment from Johnson Controls for 20 years before it takes ownership.  Since it is a lease program, it doesn’t count toward the Village’s debt load and won’t raise taxes.  The project will be paid over time through its guaranteed savings, empowering the Village to focus resources on community wellness and services.

The project, guaranteed to be completed within 14 months, encompasses 11 buildings across the Village, two parks, and the marina.  LED lighting will be installed within municipality facilities and in outdoor community spaces, generating $31,000 in lighting rebates.  To further maximize the energy efficiency effort, the Rainbow Center’s aged boiler will be replaced with a new high-efficiency boiler, and electric car charging stations will be installed at Village Hall.  For energy renewability, solar PV systems will be constructed on facility rooftops, as well as the rooftop of a new carport in the Village’s commuter rail parking lot.

Johnson Controls experts will also help the Village develop innovative waste oil heating practices, converting used truck oil into efficient energy for the community.

The Lindenhurst Rotary Club recently held their annual Installation Dinner at Goccia D’oro restaurant. The board of officials for the upcoming year are Gaye Kienle President, Mandy Bopp Vice President, Evie Sosna Executive Secretary, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle Secretary, Evie Sosna Treasurer, Jean Carney Immediate Past President and Joe Perrone Sergeant at Arms.

 

The Rotary Club’s mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity and advance understanding, goodwill and peace through fellowship and friendship.

On a beautiful, July night, the Village of Lindenhurst, along with the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, Lindenhurst Business Improvement District, and Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, sponsored its first drive-up movie night. Village residents and their families gathered in the LIRR commuter parking lot, many taking advantage of the take-out food from our local eateries, and enjoyed the movie, the outdoors, and the community fellowship.

Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, who organized the event, said, “The drive-up movie is a great idea to offer our Lindenhurst families a social night out while maintaining social distancing.”

 Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I was pleased to be involved in a night of family-friendly fun with so many of our Lindenhurst residents. Parents are now faced with finding more ways to keep their kids busy this summer, due to the Coronavirus mandates of social distancing. We hope to offer more activities like this one in the future.”

The “Adopt A Senior” bus rolled out early on the morning of June 11^th to go door-to-door delivering support, surprises, and “Lindy Pride!” to the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2020.  This collaborative community effort, spearheaded by The Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, saw hundreds of our residents, business owners, and community leaders donating their time, money, goods, and services to make this graduation year special for Lindy’s Senior Class.  The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it many challenges and disappointments for these students in their final high school year, but the Lindenhurst Community has come together, with generosity and selfless spirits, to celebrate them and honor this major milestone.  Pictured here with the crew of volunteers are LCC Executive Director Lori Novello, School Superintendent Daniel Giordano, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and Lindenhurst Mayor Mike Lavorata.

Mayor Lavorata said, “Congratulations on being re-elected as Chiefs of the Lindenhurst Fire Department, and keep up the great work. The Village of Lindenhurst is moving to create more space for outdoor dining – including possible closures of some municipal parking lots – to allow patrons of local eateries to safely enjoy “eating out” as businesses continue to slowly reopen. Mayor Michael Lavorata and Trustee RJ Renna have been working with Lindenhurst eateries to temporarily allow restaurants to expand dining out onto public sidewalks, and into public spaces, through a streamlined administrative approval process.

The Town of Babylon IDA recently held a press conference to announce their “Babylon Is Back” program for re-opening Babylon businesses, and to endorse initiatives like this one in Lindenhurst. Like so many other business owners, Carmen has had to adjust in the face of these current circumstances, with creativity and ingenuity. Many of our restaurants are offering a wide variety of take-out and delivery options, including great specials and family meal packages. Deputy Mayor Weckerle said, “Please continue to support all of our local eateries.” Mayor Michael Lavorata added, “Support restaurants now and dine at them later by buying gift cards. We all need to help support our local Lindenhurst businesses.”
