LIRR Announces Brewery Tour

June 30, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

LIRR President Phil Eng held a press conference in the Lindenhurst Downtown to announce the MTA Long Island Rail Road’s new “Long Island Brewery Tour” package.  This escorted tour package includes discounted round-trip rail and bus transportation, beer tastings at Sand City South in Lindenhurst and Great South Bay Brewery in Bay Shore, and a stop at Patchogue for shopping and dining.  Tour dates are Saturday, July 31 and Saturday, August 21, and adult-only tickets are $63.50.  Visit https://new.mta.info/daytrips for more information.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “What a wonderful partnership between the LIRR and the local business communities.  This is an especially timely event which will help to showcase some of our new and local establishments.  The suggestion to use the LIRR to travel between localities without the need to drive naturally reduces the potential of DWI!  It is a safe and enjoyable way to visit your favorite local breweries, restaurants, and pubs.”

Pita Bowl Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

February 11, 2021 by Katie McCaffrey

COVID-19 has caused a lot of problems for small, local businesses, but one local eatery – The Pita Bowl – was able to successfully open in Lindenhurst.  The Pita Bowl, located at 280A North Wellwood Avenue, would have had their ribbon-cutting last March when they opened their doors, but the pandemic prevented that from happening.  Their February 6th Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony gave the Leunes family a chance to thank friends, family, and members of the community for their support.  Mayor Lavorata said, “The Greek food at the Pita Bowl is excellent!  During these difficult times, I urge everyone to continue to support our Lindenhurst Business Community.”

Village Mourns Charlie Tanner

December 28, 2020 by Katie McCaffrey

The Village of Lindenhurst mourns the loss of lifetime Village resident, Charlie Tanner. Charlie was born in Lindenhurst in 1928 and graduation from Lindenhurst High School in 1945. He married his wife, Carol, in 1948 and were proud parents to four children, eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Charlie served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 to 1948 and again from 1950 to 1951.

Charlie was strongly involved in the Lindenhurst Fire Department. He joined Breslau Engine Company in 1949 (a third generation member of the Lindenhurst Fire Department). Charlie went on to become Captain of the Breslau Engine Company from 1959 to 1961 and Treasurer from 1987 to 2002. He was a member of the Fire Council from 1963 to 1985, and was the secretary for nineteen years. Charlie initiated the Breslau Engine Co. Scholarship Program for over thirty years.

Charlie Tanner was an exemplary member of our Lindenhurst community and he will be sorely missed.
