Ukraine’s 25th Anniversary of Independence

In celebration of the Ukraine‘s 25th Anniversary of Independence from the former Soviet Union, Rev. Olvian N. Popovici and members of the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church of  Lindenhurst gathered at Lindenhurst Village Hall to jointly raise the American flag and the Ukrainian flag in celebrations of the Ukrainian peoples dedication to democratic principles and their unity in aspiring for a better life by securing the rights to free elections and non-violent civic initiatives. Pictured here are Rev. Popovici, Sophiya Bahley, Sofiya Karastetan and Village Administrator Shawn Cullinane.

Peter Harrigan Receives Pilgrim Degree of Merit

PETER HARRIGAN

 

Peter Harrigan of the Lindenhurst Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1421 recently received the Pilgrim Degree of Merit.  The Pilgrim Degree is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member of the Moose.  Mayor Thomas Brennan attended the designation ceremony and presented Peter with a proclamation designating August 29,2016 as Peter Harrigan Day in the Village of Lindenhurst and urges all residents to join in celebrating Peter Harrigan’s achievements and selfless dedication to the residents of Lindenhurst.  Pictured here are Trustee Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Joan Masterson, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Peter Harrigan, Mayor Thomas Brennan, Clerk-Treasurer Shawn Cullinane, Deputy Mayor Michael Lavorata and Deputy Administrator Douglas Madlon.

“Paint Day” at the Rainbow Center

Lindenhurst Rainbow Center Seniors recently enjoyed an afternoon painting a beautiful beach scene.  Our first “Paint Day” proved to be a success and we are planning our next event on Wednesday, September 7th.  We will be painting a Fall scene.  If you are a senior, stop by the Rainbow Center at 293 Buffalo Avenue for information on all of our upcoming activities, events and to sign up for our Fall “Paint Day”!

Warm Weather Safety Tips

As summer approaches it is important to keep the following safety tips in mind:

General Safety Tips

  • Keep yards maintained. Overgrown grass and weeds are a prime environment for the breeding and infestation of warm weather pests such as mosquitoes and ticks. As per Village Code §43-1, grass, brush, rubbish or weeds or other rank vegetation should be no more than 12 inches above ground level. This provision does not apply to cultivated flowers and gardens, trees and shrubs.
  • Be mindful of speed limits and traffic signs.

Pest Control and Protection

Rat Issues – Mayor Brennan would like to inform residents that the Village has been taking action to prevent future rat problems. The Village has been working with Suffolk County Health Department and a contracted pest control company to ensure that homeowners treat rat infestation issues with the toughness that is required.

Tips to Prevent Rat Problems:

  • Keep lids on garbage cans
  • Monitor areas that collect water
  • Use bird feeders that prevent birdseed from falling to the ground. The excess seed attracts rats
  • Maintain lawn and weeds

If you notice a rat problem, please call the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at (631) 854-0333.

Mosquitoes – Mosquitoes breed in areas where water collects. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services suggests emptying and scrubbing birdbaths, pet water dishes, and plastic wading pools at least every three days.

Areas to Monitor for Water Collection:

  • Low spots in your yard
  • Bases of flowerpots
  • Watering cans
  • Rain gutters

The Suffolk County Division of Vector Control conducts sprayings to control the adult mosquitoes in our area. Before the spraying, all land line phones will receive a recorded message from the County’s Code Red system. Ticks – Unlike mosquitoes, ticks are active all year. Ticks crawl close to the ground on leaves, brush, and tall grass. Residents should consider the following:

Suggestions for Homeowners:

  • Keep the lawn mowed and bushes trimmed
  • Keep yard edges clear of furniture and children’s toys, as ticks are more likely to gather there.

25th Annual Senior Citizen Prom

The Lindenhurst High School Student Council recently held its 25th Annual Senior Citizen Prom. Seniors from around Lindenhurst gather at the High School for music, food and dancing, all of which is organized by high school students. Student Council President Thomas Bozzo welcomed Lindenhurst Village Officials to the event.

Village Maintains High Credit Rating.

The Village of Lindenhurst was named 2015 Tree City USA. This is the 32nd straight year that the Village has received this designation in recognition of its urban forest management. Lindenhurst Village continues to earn this honor by making a special effort to preserve the thousands of trees lining the streets and the additional hundreds of trees located within Village Parks.
