The Village of Lindenhurst mourns the passing of former Mayor Tom Brennan

February 27, 2026 by Katie McCaffrey Leave a Comment

Mayor Brennan began his service to our community in May 1999, filling a vacancy as Village Trustee, and was elected to a full four-year term in March 2000. In March 2004, he was elected Mayor and went on to be re-elected in 2008, 2012, and 2016. He stepped down from his role in 2017, leaving behind a lasting legacy of leadership, integrity, and dedication during a transformative time in our Village.

His commitment to service extended well beyond Village Hall. Mayor Brennan proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1969–1972 and was an active member of many local organizations, including the Lindenhurst Rotary Club, the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club, the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus Council 794, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1421, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and the Lindenhurst National Little League. In recognition of his dedication to our youth and community, the softball field at Village Park proudly bears his name.

Mayor Michael Lavorata shared the following:

“I have no words to describe my sadness and emptiness over this loss. Tom was my other ‘big brother’ and mentor. He taught me what it means to be a public servant. He taught us how to respect those who disagreed with us while still being able to love them and work with them. I will forever be grateful to him for bringing me on his team back in 2004 and I only hope that I can continue to keep his example of class and decorum for the rest of my life.”

Mayor Brennan is survived by his beloved wife, Diane, his children Kristen, Joseph, and Thomas, and several cherished grandchildren.

We are deeply grateful for Mayor Brennan’s knowledge, leadership, and years of faithful service to the Village of Lindenhurst. He will surely be missed, but his example of class, respect, and public service will continue to guide our community for years to come.

Please keep the Brennan family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
