So far, 2017 has been a very productive year for the Village of Lindenhurst. New projects and improvements that are essential in maintaining a standard for safety and quality of life for Village residents have commenced.
Parking has been perpetually noted as a major problem in the downtown. The Village has begun a series of improvements to the parking lots on South 1st Street. Additionally, former Mayor Brennan fought diligently to acquire three blighted pieces of property along the corner of Hoffman Avenue and High Street to be redeveloped as metered municipal parking.
A “Floating Zone” or Downtown Redevelopment District (DRD) has been established which allows the Village Board to, by legislative action, create development in certain areas. The DRD will allow the Village to apply for grants so that we may compete for funding to continue to make improvements. Without the DRD, we cannot even apply for such grants without some sort of serious plan that will assure the State of New York or Suffolk County that we are serious about change.
We are also in the process of creating an Architectural Review Board to assist in achieving the goals for our downtown. An Architectural Review Board is integral to obtaining an aesthetic appeal in the downtown that so many of you have asked me about for the last few years.
With the assistance of NYS CHIPs funds, the Department of Public Works (DPW) was able to obtain milling equipment and asphalt spreading machinery that will give us the ability to make moderate repairs to our roadways; without spending additional taxpayer dollars. The DPW can now perform the type of maintenance that used to cost quite a bit of money as it was required to be contracted out.
It is important to our administration to hear the ideas, suggestions and concerns of residents. If you have something you would like to share with the Village Board, please contact Village Hall. Along with the Board of Trustees, our Administrative staff and all the employees of the Village, we look forward to continuing to serve the Village to the best of our abilities for the betterment of Lindenhurst!
Mayor Michael A. Lavorata
